You may have noticed I've been a bit on the quiet side lately.
I'm in my creator's den, cooking up all kinds of yummy stuff for you
that you'll be hearing about as soon as I emerge!
Today I have big news for you if you're writing a book or are thinking
of writing one soon.
The most frequent question I get about my entrepreneurial book journey
is ' Rachel, how long did it take you to write it?'
As is so often the case that is an interesting question but it's not
the MOST important one if you want to write a book that actually
makes you money & establishes you as an expert in your niche.
The question I believe you must ask to ensure the success of
your book is, 'how should I structure my book so that I can turn it
into a real long term business?'
You see the huge difference here?
In the first case you may publish a lovely book
that some people buy but you never hear from them and they
never think to buy anything else from you again. (What a waste)
Perhaps you were totally focused on the 'difficult' bit of writing the book
and didn't realise you must 'begin with the end in mind.'
I mean why would your readers buy from you if you don't know how to
structure your book and author platform in such a way that it's a natural
next step?
In the 'better question' scenario you discover the answer to
how to plan your book and position your author platform so that you not
only make money selling your books but you also set yourself
up to make recurring income & attract premium clients as long
as your book is in print.
Well I know which case study I prefer! And in fact that's
what I've done with all of my books so far whether self-published
or traditionally published, as with The Niche Expert.
What most publishing professionals & book coaches won't mention
is that unless you're JK Rowling or have a Fifty Shades of Grey style
trilogy up your sleeve, the money you make from book sales is probably
not going to keep you in luxury and allow you to retire!
Sorry ... is that upsetting news? Someone had to tell you and I'm
all about being practical in an inspiring way. :)
In fact while we're at it, another shocking truth is that many even 'best-selling'
authors are flat broke.
