50 shades of mentoring - the carrot or the stick?

I've been turning this idea over in my mind for a while now and it suddenly hit me the other day.
The are two types of mentors.
There are the mentors who inspire, coach and encourage you by dangling the carrot in front of your nose and then there is the other kind which I'm not so keen on.
The other type of mentor is the type that uses the metaphorical stick to keep you in line.
I've experienced both types of mentors in my ten years with a home based business and I've noticed that different people gravitate to the different types.
These days it's easy for me to quickly sort the gurus into the different types and that makes it very easy for me to know who I would choose as a coach.
A big ego is easy to spot and it gets in the way of serving you.
If you respond well to tough love then the 'stick' mentor may be your choice.
I've
seen mentors like this use exclusion techniques and I've even been
subjected to public humiliation tactics to push my buttons and keep me
toe-ing the line. Yuk.
I rebelled.
It was a huge turn off for me.
